Buying and selling real estate is said to be a largely emotional decision. So when the emotions of a divorce are added to what can already be a trying exercise, moving real estate can be a challenge for everyone involved. When I work with a divorcing couple, or a client who is purchasing a divorce home, it’s important for me, as a REALTOR® to remember these are turbulant waters and be sensitive to all parties involved.
There are many things all realtors should keep in mind, while working with couples in a divorcing situation.
One of the first things I try to always remember is that emotions are involved. My clients are most likely going through a very trying and emotional time in their lives, made all the more volatile due to the large financial takes that come along with the real estate. I need to remain calm, reasonable and extra sensitive to everyone’s emotions. My professionalism and code of ethics play an important part in reassuring my clients that as a real estate professional, discretion, understanding, compassion and sensitivity are always with them.
As a Realtor, specializing in Divorce, it’s important, at times needed, that I may have to keep my clients separated in order to avoid unnecessary heated exchanges and help keep the stress and pressure level down. This may mean, I do double duty by working with both spouses on an individual basis, but in the long run, it hopefully makes the process a little smoother and less painful for everyone involved. Working this way, often helps find solutions to complicated issues that everyone can live with and make the process quicker.
There are times that I have to just hang up my Realtor hat and be a friend. My clients are likely to vent about their divorce and having been through one myself, I can certainly relate. I want my clients to feel comfortable and know that whatever is said between us, stays between us. I do not choose sides, I am their ally and friend, someone they can vent all they need to. Many days that’s all they need, just a shoulder, not a Realtor. But it is important that we do move on, and back to the task at hand, with getting their property dealt with.
Being a Divorce Real Estate Specialist and working with a divorce situation, is a little more involved and different than other real estate deals. I help guide my clients, along with my Team of Experts, to see their new beginnings and fresh starts. Working with them to reach their end goals and getting the deal done so they can move on as seamlessly as possible.

What I do do is work tandemly with your chosen attorney so that I do not confuse a situation but help to find options and amicable solutions for everyone. I work WITH the attorney on your behalf.
